Today I adopted a cat from Greenwich Animal Control, a division of the Police Department, While it is true that potential adopters must fill out an application, the determination of suitability is not so rigorous or arbitrary as it seems to be at some shelters (where if you even hint that you might consider letting a cat outside, you are immediately disqualified. Just try to keep a formerly "outdoors" cat indoors all the time, it's next to impossible)
They do give you a State of Connecticut spay/neuter certificate. The only "local" vets who honor it are in Stamford: the Rippowam Animal Hospital, and Davis Animal Hospital. We've got a Saturday appointment at Davis.
The new cat is very friendly, her purr machine comes on as soon as I enter the bathroom where she is being kept until she is tested for FHIV (so as to protect the other cat, Cinderella) and until the animals have had a chance to adapt to each other's sounds and scents. After tossing around a few names in my head (she is all grey, so of course the first one that came to mind was Smoky - way too common) while walking at Todd's Point, the perfect name came to me: MayDay. Which, as it happens, does NOT refer to the date, May 1, but instead is a corruption of the French "m'aider" or "help me". Good name indeed for this cat.
